shattered wing mirrors series (2021)

This series was initiated by a broken wing mirror found on the street outside my London studio. The object presented a compelling contradiction: it is a legal requirement designed to protect and extend a driver’s vision, yet its exposed position on a vehicle leaves it inherently vulnerable to the very environment it monitors. Aesthetically sleek and reflective, it captures fleeting, curved glimpses of the surrounding urban landscape.

What began as photographic research evolved into a broader exploration across painting and printmaking. Using the physical mirror as a fractured lens, the paintings document the eerily deserted streets of Soho during the 2021 lockdowns, capturing a usually bustling epicentre temporarily devoid of life. The printmaking series expands this view to coastal towns like Margate and Brighton, documenting the periods when outdoor travel was permitted but indoor spaces remained closed. As familiar scenes appear altered and fragmented, these distorted reflections evoke a sense of nostalgia for a recent past, visualising the profound unease of physical proximity and the collective fracturing of a shared reality.
